How I Travel from Medan to Tawau, Malaysia: The Most Efficient and My Hassle Free Transit Route : Easy Transit Guide
No Sweat! A Quick Guide to Traveling from Medan to Tawau: The Best Transit Route Based on My Own Experience.
Author's Note:
Getting from Medan to Tawau a city on the eastern tip of Malaysian Borneo is a medium to long haul trip that definitely needs some solid planning. Since it's pretty far geographically, picking the right way to travel is super important, especially if you’re short on time.
Why is Flying the Best Way to Get to Tawau?
Out of all the ways to get there, flying is by far the most efficient way to reach Tawau from Medan. But since there aren't any direct flights, you’ll need to transit at least once. Because of that, timing everything right, picking the best transit route, and nailing your flight schedule are huge when it comes to having a smooth and cost-effective trip.
Flying is obviously super different from when I tried out the KM Kelud Economy Class facilities , where taking a boat gives you way more of a slow-paced adventure vibe, which still has its own charm for travelers.
Based on my actual travel experience, here is a handy guide for getting from Medan to Tawau using the fastest route and the most time-efficient schedule.
The Best Route: Medan to Tawau via Kuala Lumpur
1. Figuring Out the Nearest Transit City to Tawau
Before you go booking that Medan-to-Tawau ticket, the most important thing is understanding how the flight paths work. Tawau doesn't have direct connections from Indonesia, so you've gotta make a stop.
Out of all the options out there, Kuala Lumpur is easily the most ideal transit spot because:
It’s the closest geographically to Tawau.
Flights to Tawau run super frequently.
It’s backed by both national and regional airlines.
Honestly, from my travel experience, KL just makes the most sense and is the most efficient spot to transit on your way to Tawau.
2. Sorting Out Your Medan to Transit City Leg
Once you’ve locked in KL as your transit spot, the next step is checking out flights from Medan to Kuala Lumpur.
The Medan-KL route is a super busy international route, featuring:
A pretty short flight time.
Tons of flights (around 10-11 flights a day).
This gives you so much flexibility to pick a departure time that lines up perfectly with your connecting flight to Tawau.
Before leaving Medan, I usually like to grab some local street food or whip up My Own North Sumatran Style Mi Gomak just to get a taste of home before hitting the road.

3. Picking Your Kuala Lumpur to Tawau Flight.
Next up is looking at flights from KL to Tawau. There are plenty of options for this route too, with around 6 flights a day, and the first one usually taking off around 7:00 AM Malaysian time.
Catching an early flight has some major perks, especially if you’re catching a boat afterward. Landing in Tawau early means you can make it in time for the ferries heading to Nunukan and Tarakan, which usually start running at 10:30 AM and 1:45 PM local time.
By getting into Tawau in the morning or early afternoon, you’ll have plenty of time to:
Get through immigration and grab your bags without stressing.
Head from the airport to the port without rushing.
Make your connection without needing to book an extra night in town.
Because of this, that early flight from KL to Tawau is a total game changer for travelers trying to cross borders and switch transportation methods all in one day.

4. Timing Your Departure from Medan.
If you go with the 7:00 AM flight from KL to Tawau, you’ll need to plan your departure from Medan carefully.
Good options to look at:
A Medan-to-KL flight around 5:30 PM - 6:00 PM WIB.
A later backup flight around 8:00 PM, though that’s risky if there’s a delay.
To avoid any risk of missing it, I'd highly recommend booking a flight that's one slot earlier than the last one of the day.
5. Transiting and Chilling at KL Airport
With an arrival time around 7:30 PM - 8:00 PM Malaysian time, you’ll have plenty of downtime.
The airport has you covered with:
Comfy international transit areas.
Clean bathrooms and free drinking water.
Baby care room
Transit hotel options right inside the terminal.
If you don't feel like shelling out for a room, the international arrivals area is totally fine to kick back in for a bit.
6. Check-in & Switching Terminals
That 7:00 AM flight to Tawau means you’ll need to:
Check in at least 2 hours early.
Head out of the international terminal around 3:00 AM.
Here’s what you gotta do:
Make your way over to the domestic terminal.
Print your boarding pass (if you didn't do web check-in yet).
Clear Malaysian immigration.
Even though early morning flights are usually pretty quiet, this whole process still takes time since immigration can sometimes have lines or tech hiccups.
7. Waiting at the Gate
People usually hit the gate around 5:00 AM, giving you a solid hour and a half before boarding starts.
Use this time to:
Chill out for a second.
Double-check your passport, ticket, and ID.
Juice up your phone or devices.
Airline Recommendations
For a comfy trip:
Batik Air Malaysia is my go-to for the Medan-KL leg.
Malaysia Airlines for the KL-to-Tawau hop.
The flight from KL to Tawau takes about 3 hours, and Malaysia Airlines actually gives you free meals, which makes a medium-haul flight way more enjoyable.
